The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
