Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's established political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Underway

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with several leading political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
