Why this Democratic Party Refuses to Release its 2024 Election Autopsy: A Deep Dive.

The move from the Democratic National Committee to suppress the release regarding its internal autopsy report concerning the 2024 election appears shocking yet not surprising. Opposed to unpleasant candor, the party's leadership apparatus often functions closer to a publicity machine than an electoral entity committed to building local power to secure victories.

An Environment That Avoids Dissent

Hesitant to depart from the party establishment's culture demanding unity, the committee has continued under the influence of the previous administration all through this past year. Making public an official autopsy might have shown whether party leaders actually want to foster public discourse about the missteps that paved the way for the former president to return to the White House. Instead, the DNC is proceeding as if there are no lessons to be learned from the stunning loss of 2024.

The top priority: does this help us win? If not, it becomes a sideline issue from our fundamental goal," a rationale which was presented for withholding the document.

Major Failures an Analysis Could Have Addressed

Any valuable post-mortem worth its salt would not dodge key points of failure. Among them are:

  • Voter Disengagement: The loss among millions of voters who supported the party's candidate in 2020 was decisive in the close 2024 election.
  • A Decision to Seek Re-election: The stubborn insistence of the incumbent to seek re-election, alongside a last-minute step-aside, has been criticized as denying the party's base the chance for open primaries.
  • Abandoning the Working-Class Base: While facing inflation, the electoral effort is criticized for accommodating corporate donors' interests while failing to confront the role of corporate greed.
  • A Foreign Policy Impact: The refusal to reconsider a stance on the situation in Gaza allegedly caused driving away many voters, particularly with youth voters, Arab-Americans, Muslim voters.
  • A Decline in Young Voter Support: Extensive evidence indicates a huge drop-off in votes for the candidate among voters aged 18-29.

A Record Shunning Scrutiny

Choosing secrecy is consistent with a recurring tendency to avoid uncomfortable facts. It recalls a situation where the vast majority of elected Democrat in Congress acquiesced to a sitting president's insistence on seeking another term until a disastrous campaign event forced an exit.

Concurrently, overwhelming numbers within the party's base had been continually telling researchers that they opposed the incumbent to run again.

Financial Issues

An honest autopsy would also probe questions regarding financial allocations, including what sums flowed to party strategists and ad buyers over the course of an electoral effort that managed to spend an enormous sum over a few months.

The Underlying Implication

Ultimately, the blockage of the official autopsy is symptomatic of an allegiance toward party leaders that oversaw a losing national race. The implication to the party's base – which includes millions of small donors – is that they do not have a right to see the lessons the leadership have learned based on a report drawing from feedback from all states.

A party unable to honestly assess where it went wrong is unlikely to climb out of the cycle which was so advantageous to the winning candidate.
