Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the option to challenge specific decisions from the official, mirroring the practice already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Practical Application

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
